One way or another, Councils - as planning authorities guiding development, or directly as developers - are the key delivery arm for the Government’s target to build 1.5 million new homes during its term.

At Red Loft, we are determined to use our experience and skills to help Councils in this ambitious delivery target which is why we are now the founding sponsors and actively supporting the new campaign -

1.5M New Homes: The Local Government Challenge.

This campaign has been founded by Toby Fox to give Councils a voice - to share what works and what needs to change in public sector housing delivery. It’s about time we heard the voices of the practitioners in this debate – the people who have to deliver on their promises.

Each month, the 1.5M New Homes team will visit Councils across the country to ask them what is and isn’t working for them in trying to help deliver 1.5 million new homes. They will be visiting a housing site that works (to discuss the ingredients of success), and also a difficult or stalled site (to talk about the challenges). Each participating Council is selecting the sites and decides the key messages they’d like to get across. The team will conduct short video interviews with the directors of housing or Council Leaders as well as leading Councillors. This will then be published in various formats across YouTube, LinkedIn, Facebook, TikTok, Instagram, Spotify, Apple Podcasts and other audio streaming channels.

A few weeks after publishing, there will be a webinar featuring the Council for that month, alongside a member of our team at Red Loft, Toby Fox and other special guests, to reflect on the insights captured that month. This will be an open panel discussion which we hope attendees will also get involved in to share their own experiences and questions.

In this way, the campaign aims to support Councils in sharing knowledge about accelerating housing development – especially affordable housing – and to offer MHCLG and its agencies valuable feedback that clarifies what is required to deliver the homes that our communities need.

The campaign has already kickstarted in Slough this month, with a series of interviews being posted on the following social media channels:
